Fortnite Reruns Final Showdown After Matchmaking Issues

Epic Games reran Fortnite OG’s Final Showdown live event on August 29 after matchmaking problems prevented some players from joining the original showing.

The first event began at 2:00 PM ET, recreating the Chapter 1 battle between Mecha Team Leader and The Devourer inside Fortnite OG.

Epic had advised players to enter an OG match by 1:55 PM ET so they would be ready before the fight started.

Instead, a number of players reported getting stuck while searching for a server or remaining in matchmaking long enough to miss part or all of the event.

Complaints appeared across Fortnite community channels shortly after the event began, with some players saying they had attempted to join several minutes beforehand but were still unable to load into a match in time.

Epic responded by announcing an unexpected second showing.

The official Fortnite Status account confirmed that The Final Showdown would run again at 4:30 PM ET, saying matchmaking had been fixed so players could enter without the same problem.

Epic staff also repeated the message directly in Fortnite community discussions where players had reported missing the first event.

The rerun gave affected players another opportunity to watch the full confrontation rather than relying on recordings or clips posted afterward.

The Final Showdown originally took place during Fortnite Chapter 1 Season 9 in July 2019.

The event featured Mecha Team Leader fighting The Devourer, also known as Cattus, after the monster emerged near the island.

Fortnite OG brought the confrontation back as part of its continuing recreation of major moments from the game’s original Chapter 1 timeline.

During the event, players watched the two giant characters fight around the island before Mecha Team Leader eventually defeated The Devourer.

Epic temporarily disabled player damage and paused the Storm in preparation for the live sequence, allowing players to position themselves around the map without normal Battle Royale threats interfering.

Jetpacks were also available so players could move around and find better viewing positions.

The event itself appears to have attracted a sizeable audience.

Fortnite community trackers and prominent leak accounts reported more than one million players participating around the original event window, although Epic has not published an official attendance figure.

The second showing also attracted a substantial audience after Epic announced the rerun.

Live events have historically been one of Fortnite’s biggest draws, but their one-time nature can make technical problems particularly disruptive.

Unlike a normal playlist or quest, players who fail to connect at the correct time can miss the entire experience.

That was especially relevant here because The Final Showdown was being presented as a scheduled live recreation rather than an event players could launch whenever they wanted.

Epic’s decision to rerun it therefore represents a relatively direct response to the matchmaking problems.

Rather than simply acknowledging the issue, the company repeated the entire event roughly two and a half hours later.

The matchmaking problems were not listed as a broader Fortnite outage on Epic’s public status page at the time, suggesting the issue was more specifically tied to players attempting to enter the OG event.

Some community members reported that switching between Build and Zero Build playlists helped them connect during the first showing, but the workaround was inconsistent and did not prevent everyone from missing the event.

Epic said those matchmaking problems were addressed before the rerun began.

The Final Showdown replay has now concluded, leaving recordings as the main way to watch it for players who missed both showings.

For those affected by the original matchmaking problems, however, Epic’s unexpected 4:30 PM ET rerun provided a second chance to see one of Fortnite Chapter 1’s most recognizable live events recreated inside Fortnite OG.
