Fortnite’s upcoming Birthday quests have surfaced through the v42.20 files ahead of the anniversary event going live. Dataminer FireMonkey published the newly added quest set following the update, revealing another round of limited-time objectives built around Fortnite’s traditional birthday activities. Epic Games has not yet formally detailed the complete quest lineup, so the information should be treated as datamined until the event is activated in-game.

The Birthday quests continue the familiar structure Epic has used for previous anniversary celebrations, asking players to interact with special birthday content rather than complete ordinary combat milestones. Birthday Presents and birthday-themed activities feature in the files, indicating that the event will again temporarily change the Battle Royale loot pool and map. Epic has independently acknowledged Birthday Presents in its v42.20 pre-release documentation, where it lists a known issue that can prevent the item from being thrown on certain Prefab terrain.

That reference provides first-party confirmation that Birthday Presents are part of the new update, even though Epic has not yet published a full Birthday event announcement. Historically, the throwable Legendary item creates a large gift box containing loot once deployed, and Epic has repeatedly brought it back alongside cakes and other anniversary items. Its presence in v42.20 therefore fits directly with the quest material uncovered by FireMonkey.

The leaked quests are arriving alongside a separate set of anniversary cosmetics already discovered in the same update. The Fortnite ninth-birthday rewards found in v42.20 include a new Back Bling, Pickaxe and an FNCS Shield-related reward. The quest leak provides the gameplay side of that event, although the precise requirements for unlocking each cosmetic should not be assumed until Epic activates the progression system.

Fortnite Battle Royale turns nine years old this month, having originally launched in September 2017. Epic has marked the anniversary annually with temporary quests, decorated Battle Buses, cakes placed around the island and returning party-themed items. Previous Birthday events have typically remained available only for a limited period, making their associated cosmetics and challenges time-sensitive.

The v42.20 files also indicate that the celebration is being prepared as part of a larger mid-season update rather than a standalone patch. Epic has already referred to v42.20 in its developer documentation, while multiple dataminers have linked the update to September 17. Other content associated with the same patch includes new collaborations, Sprite-related additions and further seasonal changes.

Epic’s own known-issues post gives another indication that the Birthday content is close to release. The company specifically warns creators that Birthday Presents cannot currently be thrown on some Prefab terrain, which can prevent players from opening them and collecting the contents. That issue would be unusually specific if the item were not expected to become relevant again during the v42.20 period.

The Birthday quests also continue a busy run of Fortnite datamines this season. The previous update exposed substantial unreleased material, including the Geno story questline found in v42.10, alongside cosmetics, gameplay systems and Lobby Hack-related content. As with that material, quest text appearing in the files can reveal Epic’s current plans without guaranteeing that every objective will reach players unchanged.

For now, the key confirmed point is that v42.20 contains the infrastructure for Fortnite’s next Birthday celebration, while FireMonkey’s datamine exposes the accompanying quest set before Epic has announced it publicly. Birthday Presents are also directly referenced by Epic in the update’s known issues, strengthening the evidence that the anniversary gameplay is imminent.

Epic has not yet announced the Birthday event’s exact start and end times or published its complete quest requirements. Those details should become clearer once the v42.20 content is activated and the Birthday tab appears in-game.
