Minecraft is now available natively on Nintendo Switch 2, bringing enhanced graphics through Vibrant Visuals, an updated Super Mario Mash-Up Pack and upgrade options for existing Nintendo Switch owners. Mojang Studios confirmed the launch on October 27, 2026, introducing a version optimized specifically for Nintendo’s newer console.
The dedicated release adds visual improvements unavailable in the original Nintendo Switch version, including directional lighting, volumetric fog and dynamic shadows. Players who already own Minecraft digitally on Nintendo Switch can also upgrade to the Switch 2 Standard Edition for free in most regions during a limited promotional period.
Vibrant Visuals is the central graphical improvement in the Switch 2 release. Originally introduced to Minecraft in June 2025, the graphics system enhances the game’s environments through updated lighting, atmospheric effects and reflections. Shadows change with the position of the sun, water reflects surrounding environments, and volumetric fog adds depth to landscapes.

The enhanced graphics are enabled by default on Nintendo Switch 2. Players can also access Vibrant Visuals-compatible content through the Minecraft Marketplace, although the feature is not supported in every situation. Mojang notes that Vibrant Visuals is unavailable during split-screen gameplay and when using certain Marketplace worlds and content.
Alongside the graphical upgrades, the Nintendo-exclusive Super Mario Mash-Up Pack has received an update supporting Vibrant Visuals. The pack includes Mario-inspired environments, textures, music and character skins, allowing players to explore locations such as Peach’s Castle and Delfino Plaza within Minecraft.
The updated pack includes 15 music tracks and 40 player skins inspired by Nintendo’s Super Mario franchise. It is included with every Nintendo Switch 2 edition of Minecraft, although players must visit the Minecraft Marketplace to claim the downloadable content.
Minecraft is available digitally in three versions: Standard Edition, Deluxe Collection and Ultimate Collection. All three include the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, while the Deluxe and Ultimate Collections provide additional add-ons, Character Creator items and Minecoins. A physical Standard Edition is also available at retail.
Existing Nintendo Switch owners have several upgrade options. From October 27, 2026, at 9 AM Pacific Time until January 31, 2027, at 9 AM Pacific Time, players who own Minecraft digitally on the original Switch can upgrade to the digital Switch 2 Standard Edition for free in most territories through the Nintendo eShop.
The free upgrade has regional exceptions. Players in Japan, Taiwan and Thailand must pay 100 JPY, 30 NTD and 25 THB, respectively.
Digital owners can alternatively upgrade to the Deluxe Collection or Ultimate Collection at discounted prices. Players who own the original Switch version physically are also eligible for a discounted Ultimate Collection upgrade. During the promotional period, launching the original Switch version on a Switch 2 displays an in-game message containing the relevant upgrade offer.
Mojang has also confirmed that existing Nintendo Switch worlds can be transferred to the Switch 2 version, allowing players to continue their previous survival and creative projects rather than starting again.
The new edition retains Minecraft’s multiplayer features, including local split-screen, cross-platform multiplayer and Realms support. Cross-platform play requires a Microsoft account, while online multiplayer on Nintendo’s consoles requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
Minecraft’s arrival adds another native release to the Switch 2 library on October 27, alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 launch of The Outlast Trials. Additional games are scheduled for the platform later in the week, including RV There Yet?, which arrives on Switch 2 with cross-play on October 29.
For Minecraft players, the dedicated Switch 2 version offers the game’s updated visual presentation alongside a way to preserve existing worlds and transition from the previous Nintendo console without purchasing the Standard Edition again in most regions.
