Capcom has released its latest Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance weapon breakdown, this time detailing the Sword & Shield’s new Boosted Actions. The September 8 trailer highlights empowered combo routes, a new Bladecoating Slash mechanic and the ability to clutch onto wounds from a distance. Ascendance is scheduled to launch in 2027 as Monster Hunter Wilds’ major Master Rank expansion.

The Sword & Shield showcase forms part of Capcom’s daily series covering how the expansion’s Boost Bracer changes each of the game’s 14 weapon types. The system is built around staying aggressive to build Boost Bracer energy, then activating Boost through a Boost Driver or another weapon-specific action. While boosted, hunters gain access to enhanced attacks and new combo opportunities intended to help deal with Ascendance’s stronger Master Rank monsters.

For Sword & Shield, Capcom summarizes the changes with three main abilities: empowered combos, Bladecoating Slash and the ability to clutch onto wounds from range. The footage shows the weapon retaining its fast, mobile style while gaining more ways to stay attached to a monster and continue pressure after it moves away. This follows the same broader design direction already shown in the Great Sword Boosted Action breakdown and Bow Boosted Action showcase, where the Boost Bracer expands existing weapon identities rather than replacing them.

Bladecoating Slash is the most distinctive addition in the Sword & Shield video. The move lets the hunter use an item while attacking, coating the blade with an effect based on that item type. In the trailer, a healing item is used to apply a coating that allows subsequent hits to restore health, showing how the system can add utility directly into an offensive combo.

Capcom also indicates that Bladecoating Slash can be performed even when the hunter is not in the boosted state. That makes it different from many of the abilities being demonstrated throughout the Boost Bracer series, because it appears to expand the Sword & Shield’s normal moveset rather than functioning solely as a temporary Boost enhancement. The mechanic has immediately drawn comparisons to the Sword & Shield oil system from earlier Monster Hunter games, although Ascendance appears to implement the idea through regular inventory items rather than dedicated oil consumables.

The new long-range wound interaction gives Sword & Shield another method of maintaining close-range pressure. During Boost, the hunter can rapidly close distance and clutch onto an existing wound from farther away, allowing an attack sequence to continue even when the monster has moved out of normal melee range. The footage also shows faster movement into attacks and expanded follow-up options across several familiar Sword & Shield combo routes.

Those additions fit into Ascendance’s larger combat overhaul. The expansion introduces the Boost Bracer across all weapon types, with each receiving different enhanced actions rather than a single universal move. Capcom has already demonstrated changes for Great Sword, Bow, Dual Blades, Hammer, Light Bowgun and Charge Blade, with the Sword & Shield now joining that lineup ahead of additional daily breakdowns scheduled through September 15.

Ascendance itself was revealed as a large-scale expansion that introduces Master Rank, new monsters and the Skybound Eyrie locale. Previously announced creatures include Araketa and Gundoraja, while Lao-Shan Lung is also returning as part of the expansion. The initial Ascendance gameplay reveal also established the Boost Bracer as one of the expansion’s major mechanical additions.

Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance is planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC in 2027, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version also in development. Capcom has not announced a specific release date. The Sword & Shield trailer is the seventh weapon-focused Boosted Action breakdown released so far, with the remaining weapon showcases set to continue daily.
