Muramasa: Revenant Blades is receiving extensive combat and progression changes to accommodate all six playable protagonists, including the four characters originally introduced through the Genroku Legends DLC. Developer Vanillaware has reworked character-specific mechanics, expanded crafting options, and adjusted difficulty requirements so players can begin with any of the six campaigns when the action RPG launches on February 4, 2027.
The changes were detailed in an interview conducted by Noisy Pixel with Marvelous producer Makoto Shioda and Vanillaware development director Wataru Nakanishi. The developers explained how combining the original game and its previously separate DLC campaigns required additional balancing, particularly because the four Genroku Legends stories were originally designed for experienced players.
Muramasa: Revenant Blades brings together Kisuke and Momohime, the original protagonists, alongside Okoi, Gonbe, Arashimaru, and Rajaki from the PlayStation Vita release’s Genroku Legends DLC. Although the availability of all six campaigns from the beginning was previously announced, the latest interview provides additional details about how their different combat and progression systems have been unified.

One of the main challenges involved the original difficulty structure of Genroku Legends. Those campaigns assumed players had already completed much of the main game and understood its combat mechanics. As a result, they featured more demanding encounters and fewer introductory explanations.
Nakanishi confirmed that the development team has added tutorials and revised progression requirements, including conditions governing access to later stages. These adjustments are intended to make each campaign suitable as a starting point rather than requiring players to gain experience through Kisuke or Momohime first.
Character progression has also been expanded. In the original release, the four DLC protagonists had shorter campaigns with more limited progression options. Revenant Blades introduces additional crafting and upgrade systems that bring their character development closer to the main game’s structure.
While Kisuke and Momohime primarily develop their abilities through sword forging, the four Genroku Legends protagonists can craft and upgrade charms to strengthen their equipment and abilities. The revised systems provide more opportunities to develop characters throughout their individual stories.
Combat balancing presented another challenge because of the way different protagonists consume Spirit, the resource used to perform special attacks.
Revenant Blades introduces a mechanic that restores Spirit when players successfully land basic attacks. This allows players to recover resources through normal combat rather than relying entirely on existing recovery methods.
However, Gonbe and Arashimaru required additional adjustments. In the PlayStation Vita version, Gonbe’s sickle attacks and Arashimaru’s kunai attacks consumed Spirit even when used as basic ranged attacks. That behavior conflicted with the new mechanic, which is designed to restore Spirit through normal attacks.
Nakanishi explained that preserving those characters’ distinctive fighting styles while allowing them to use skills as frequently as the other protagonists was particularly challenging. The developers therefore had to reconsider their resource balance without removing the characteristics that distinguish their combat systems.
The revised game also introduces systems for mastering and equipping skills, giving players additional control over their combat abilities. These changes accompany previously announced improvements that allow Secret Arts, which were formerly tied to specific swords, to be customized more freely.
Exploration has also been expanded through the ability to travel freely across the map. Together with the revised skill systems, these additions are intended to provide more flexibility while preserving the side-scrolling sword combat and exploration that defined the original release.
For returning players, Revenant Blades includes a Classic Mode designed to preserve the original gameplay experience alongside the revised systems. This gives longtime fans an alternative to the updated mechanics and balancing.
The project is a substantially expanded revival of Vanillaware’s Muramasa: The Demon Blade, originally released for Wii in 2009 and later brought to PlayStation Vita as Muramasa: Rebirth in 2013. The new version combines the original campaigns and Genroku Legends content with updated visuals supporting resolutions up to 4K, revised controls, additional gameplay systems, and a new English voiceover.
Muramasa: Revenant Blades launches February 4, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC via Steam. It will also mark Vanillaware’s first release on PC.
The game joins a growing selection of upcoming action titles for Nintendo’s newer hardware, including Tenjutsu, the action roguelike scheduled for Switch 2 in 2027.
Marvelous has already confirmed the release date and supported platforms, while additional details about some of the revised gameplay systems have yet to be disclosed.
