Sony has released PS4 firmware update 14.02, introducing security fixes for its previous-generation PlayStation console. The update arrived on November 4, 2026, following recent reports of jailbreak exploits affecting PS4 firmware 14.00 and a separate series of security updates for the PS5.
Sony confirmed the new version through its official PlayStation support website, where the patch notes contain just one change: “We’ve made some security fixes to the system software.” The company has not disclosed which vulnerabilities were addressed or whether the update specifically targets recently reported jailbreak methods.
The release follows PS4 firmware 14.00, which focused on system software performance and stability. Unlike that update, version 14.02 explicitly introduces security-related changes without listing additional features, interface improvements or performance adjustments.

The timing is notable because reports have recently emerged of exploits working on PS4 firmware 14.00, including claims involving modified software and cheating in online games such as GTA Online. These reports have raised concerns about unauthorized modifications potentially affecting multiplayer sessions.
However, there is currently no official confirmation that firmware 14.02 blocks those specific exploits. Sony’s patch notes do not identify the security weaknesses involved, and the existence of a security update alone does not establish that previously demonstrated jailbreak techniques have stopped working.
The PS4 update also follows Sony’s PS5 firmware 14.22 security update, which similarly introduced security fixes without publicly identifying the vulnerabilities addressed.
Recent developments in PlayStation security research have also highlighted the relationship between firmware versions and unofficial software compatibility. The expansion of PS5 Linux compatibility to newer firmware and PS5 Pro hardware illustrates how specific system software versions can affect homebrew projects.
For PS4 owners using standard system software, firmware 14.02 is available through the console’s update settings. Users can check for the update by opening Settings and selecting System Software Update. Sony also provides an official USB-based installation method for consoles that cannot update directly over the internet.
Sony recommends keeping PlayStation consoles updated to protect against security risks and maintain compatibility with supported software and services. The company also cautions that some applications or content may require newer system software versions.
For users maintaining homebrew environments, the practical implications remain less clear. Installing newer firmware can affect compatibility with exploits and unofficial applications, but the specific impact of version 14.02 has not been established by Sony’s public documentation.
With the PS4 now approaching 13 years since its original November 2013 launch, firmware 14.02 demonstrates that Sony continues to provide security maintenance for the older console. Whether this particular release addresses the recently reported firmware 14.00 exploits remains unconfirmed.
