Sony has quietly revised the internal hardware of the PS5 Slim, with a teardown of the Marvel’s Wolverine Limited Edition revealing a new EDM-051 motherboard and several changes to the console’s design. The revision was discovered by console technician Modyfikator89 after opening the newer Wolverine-themed system. Sony has not publicly announced the hardware changes as a new PS5 model.
The teardown shows that the EDM-051 motherboard uses a different internal layout from earlier PS5 Slim revisions, with several components rearranged and parts of the design simplified. The most immediately noticeable repairability change concerns the CMOS battery, which is now a standard CR2032 cell positioned so it can be replaced much more easily. Earlier PS5 Slim designs required substantially more disassembly to reach the battery, while the newer arrangement follows a more accessible approach previously used in the PS5 Pro.
The cooling system has also been revised. According to the teardown findings, the area around the APU and liquid-metal interface has been redesigned, with the containment approach appearing closer to the one used in the PS5 Pro. The heatsink itself has a different construction and material compared with earlier Slim revisions, indicating that Sony has made another round of changes to the console’s thermal design.

These changes do not appear to increase the PS5’s gaming performance. Instead, they affect the console’s internal construction, cooling and long-term serviceability. The easier access to the CR2032 battery could make a future battery replacement considerably less complicated, while the revised liquid-metal arrangement may provide a more controlled interface around the processor.
The EDM-051 revision was found in a PS5 Slim CFI-2116 Wolverine Limited Edition, so it is not yet clear how broadly the updated hardware has been deployed across Sony’s PS5 Slim lineup. Sony has already introduced multiple internal revisions during the PS5’s lifespan, often changing components and cooling arrangements without altering the console’s external appearance or announcing a new consumer-facing model.
The teardown also indicates changes beyond the motherboard and cooling system, including a different HDMI retimer implementation and further simplification of the internal layout. The documentation included with the examined console reportedly still reflects the earlier configuration and does not explain the newly accessible CR2032 battery.
For buyers, the revision means that two PS5 Slim consoles that look essentially identical can contain meaningfully different internal hardware. The new design is primarily relevant to repairability and thermal engineering rather than frame rates or other gameplay capabilities, and more teardowns will be needed to establish whether the EDM-051 configuration becomes standard across future PS5 Slim production.
