Square Enix has revealed new gameplay details for Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United, outlining additional traveling companions, exploration systems, equipment crafting and combat mechanics ahead of its February 16, 2027 release. The upcoming turn-based RPG remake is launching on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
The October 26 information release introduces five recruitable companions and explains how players will develop their characters, manage party formations and strengthen equipment throughout the adventure. Square Enix also provided new screenshots demonstrating several of these systems.
Five traveling companions have been detailed: The Minstrel, Tatyana, Nora, Muse and Charl. The Minstrel is a wandering musician frequently encountered in town pubs, while Tatyana is a traveler who introduces herself under different names. Nora operates a smithing workshop in Pidona, connecting her character to the game’s equipment crafting system.

Muse is the surviving daughter of Pidona’s House Claudius, and Charl is a former Imperial Guard captain who serves as her personal protector. Both characters reside in Pidona’s old quarter.
Exploration uses a world map that expands as players gather information from townspeople or travel by ship. Conversations can reveal previously inaccessible locations and new objectives. The map also identifies potential recruitable companions, displaying unknown characters as silhouettes until they have been encountered.
Completing quests and objectives increases a player’s renown, unlocking additional benefits as their rank improves. These include more ability slots and expanded United Attacks, connecting exploration and quest completion to combat progression.
Equipment crafting takes place at the Pidona Workshop, where players can spend aurums and collected materials to forge or improve weapons and armor. Crafted equipment becomes available after winning a specified number of battles and can subsequently be purchased through the workshop’s store.
Players can expand the workshop by locating missing smiths throughout the world. Bringing them back increases the range of available equipment. Raising renown also unlocks the ability to reforge the Matriarch’s sacred relics using a material called Destinite.
The equipment system allows characters to carry two weapons simultaneously. Equipping heavier defensive gear improves protection but increases encumbrance, potentially reducing movement speed during battles. An Auto-Equip option is available for players who prefer automatic equipment selection.
Some signature equipment previously restricted to specific characters can now be equipped by other party members. However, the original wielder may receive additional bonuses when using their signature gear.
Party management has also been expanded. Players can change their retinue at pubs or save points, including those found inside dungeons and throughout the overworld. Previously recruited characters can be removed and reintroduced without losing access to them.
Characters outside the active party continue receiving a portion of Technique Points, allowing them to make progress even when they are not participating directly in battles.
The remake also introduces Mr. S, a recurring character from the SaGa series who can be discovered in towns and dungeons. Finding him rewards players with stickers, with every five collected unlocking benefits such as faster equipment forging or information about undiscovered treasure chests.
Combat formations are another major focus of the announcement. Square Enix confirmed that Destinies United includes formations absent from the original game, alongside entirely new additions to the franchise.
One example, Triple Incisors, places three characters at the front with enhanced melee capabilities while two rear characters receive ranged attack bonuses. Another, Rampaging Mammoth, increases the Speed of all party members and provides additional protection to its frontline character after acting.
Character progression revolves around weapon and spell proficiency. Using particular weapon types or magic schools during combat earns Technique Points, gradually increasing the corresponding levels and improving physical or magical attack effectiveness.
Techniques, evasions and spells can also be mastered through repeated use. Once mastered, these skills can be immediately taught to other characters, making it easier to distribute powerful abilities across the party.
Individual characters possess unique abilities that unlock through battles or story progression. These range from attribute improvements to recovering HP during each turn. Characters can equip up to four abilities, with automatic equipment options available for preferred combat roles.
Mastered abilities can also be shared with other characters under certain conditions, including when the original wielder is outside the active party or has disabled their primary ability.
Another returning combat feature is the ley line system, which changes how elemental magic behaves during encounters. Battlefields can develop an affinity with a particular magic school, strengthening matching spells and sometimes providing passive HP recovery.
Casting spells or using techniques associated with opposing elements can temporarily change the active ley line. The opposing elemental pairs include Shucho and Genbu, Soryu and Byakko, and Solar and Lunar.
Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United is a full HD remake of the classic RPG, retaining its Freeform Scenario structure in which players choose their protagonists, destinations and story progression. The remake features updated visuals, voiced events in English and Japanese, and rearranged music supervised by original composer Kenji Ito.
The game launches February 16, 2027, across PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
