A gameplay screenshot from Ubisoft’s canceled Project U has leaked online, offering a new look at the cooperative PvE shooter that spent years in development. The image was posted on X by a user identified as Kran, who questioned whether sharing the screenshot would still violate a non-disclosure agreement after the game had been canceled. Insider Gaming independently reported on the leak on September 28, 2026.
Project U was developed at Ubisoft Annecy and was previously known internally as Project Pathfinder. Ubisoft officially announced the project in 2022 as a session-based cooperative shooter, but the game went through repeated changes during development. Earlier reporting from Insider Gaming said the project struggled with replayability and was sent back to the drawing board after roughly five years of work.
The game’s proposed structure was unusual for a cooperative shooter. Ten teams of four players, potentially putting as many as 40 players into the same session, were expected to fight through progressively more difficult enemy forces while moving toward the center of the map. The objective ultimately involved reaching a central area and defeating a powerful boss, with the increasing difficulty intended to create pressure as teams advanced.

The newly leaked image provides a glimpse at how that concept translated into actual gameplay. The screenshot shows a third-person combat interface and an environment from the game, giving players a look at the visual direction and gameplay systems that were never officially demonstrated in a public release. Other reports describing the image indicate that the interface included combat abilities and movement options, although the screenshot alone does not establish how those mechanics would have worked in the final version.
Project U’s development history helps explain why the screenshot is notable. Insider Gaming previously reported that Ubisoft repeatedly reworked the project because the team had difficulty making the experience sufficiently replayable. The game’s map was reportedly revised with additional biomes and bosses, while later versions of its enemies took inspiration from the machine designs in Guerrilla Games’ Horizon series. Despite those changes, the project continued to face questions about its long-term appeal.
Ubisoft eventually ended Project U as part of the company’s broader restructuring in early 2026. Insider Gaming subsequently identified Project Pathfinder, the game’s later codename, as one of the projects canceled during that restructuring. The cancellation followed years of development and multiple rounds of testing, leaving the leaked screenshot as one of the few publicly available looks at the game beyond previously surfaced material.
The screenshot is not the first Project U material to emerge outside Ubisoft’s official channels. In March 2025, Insider Gaming reported that the game’s introductory cinematic had leaked online, although Ubisoft later had the footage removed through a DMCA request. The latest image therefore adds another piece to the limited public record of a project that never reached release.
Leaks involving canceled games can provide an unusual view of development work that otherwise remains inaccessible after a project is shut down. Similar material has surfaced around other abandoned projects, including a Rare Project Dream SNES prototype offering a playable look at an unreleased version of the game and Project Moonlight concept art showing how another canceled title was taking shape.
For Project U, the leaked screenshot does not change the game’s canceled status, but it provides additional evidence of how Ubisoft’s long-running cooperative shooter had evolved before development ended. With no commercial release planned, any further gameplay footage or development material that surfaces will likely remain the main way players can examine what the project ultimately became.
