The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered will support Xbox Play Anywhere when it launches on September 29, 2026, giving eligible Xbox owners access to the PC version through the Microsoft Store without requiring a separate purchase. CD Projekt Red confirmed the feature ahead of the remaster’s release, adding another benefit for players already planning to claim the free upgrade. The entitlement applies within Microsoft’s Xbox ecosystem rather than providing an additional copy on Steam or other PC storefronts.
Xbox Play Anywhere allows supported games purchased digitally through Xbox or the Microsoft Store to be played across Xbox consoles and Windows PCs using the same license. For The Witcher 3, that means players with a qualifying Xbox version will be able to install the corresponding PC release through the Xbox app or Microsoft Store once Play Anywhere support goes live. Progress and achievements are also designed to carry between supported Xbox and PC devices under the same Microsoft account.
The new entitlement arrives alongside The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered, which CD Projekt Red announced at Gamescom in August. The remaster is scheduled for September 29 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a native Nintendo Switch 2 version also planned for the same date. Existing owners on qualifying platforms will receive Remastered as a free upgrade rather than having to purchase the game again.

Remastered is intended to modernize the 2015 RPG with improvements to visuals, performance and gameplay while retaining the original game’s story and structure. CD Projekt Red has also folded Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine into the package, and owners of the base game have been granted access to both expansions at no additional cost. Existing save files remain compatible, while the game’s established cross-progression functionality is also being retained.
The Xbox Play Anywhere addition is particularly useful for players who previously owned The Witcher 3 only on Microsoft’s console platform. Once support is activated, a qualifying purchase can cover both Xbox Series X|S and the Microsoft Store PC version, removing the need to buy a second PC license for players who switch between the two. It follows Microsoft’s broader push to make a single Xbox purchase usable across console, Windows PC and supported handheld devices whenever publishers adopt Play Anywhere.
CD Projekt Red’s announcement does not mean that every existing PC copy becomes interchangeable across storefronts. Steam, GOG and Epic Games Store versions remain separate purchases from the Microsoft Store entitlement, so an Xbox license will not automatically create copies on those services. The feature instead extends ownership specifically through Microsoft’s Play Anywhere system, with the Xbox and Windows versions linked through the same ecosystem.
The remaster is also arriving as CD Projekt Red prepares another major addition to the game. Songs of the Past, a third expansion for The Witcher 3, is scheduled for 2027 and will take Geralt to Letten, a new region connected to Dandelion’s homeland. CD Projekt Red has said the expansion will introduce new quests, characters, monsters, mutagens and combat options, including a chain weapon inspired by the original Witcher game’s opening cinematic.
Microsoft continues to expand the role of Play Anywhere across new Xbox releases, with games such as Hope in the City also launching with support for the feature. The Witcher 3 is more unusual because Play Anywhere is being added years after the original Xbox release rather than being built into the game’s ownership model from launch.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered launches September 29, 2026. For qualifying Xbox owners, the update will not only provide the Remastered version at no additional charge but will also extend their license to the supported Windows PC release through Xbox Play Anywhere.
