Nvidia has officially confirmed that DLSS 5 will launch on September 3, with NBA 2K27 becoming the first game to support the technology. The release introduces Nvidia’s new 3D-Guided Neural Rendering system and will initially be available on GeForce RTX 50 Series desktop and laptop GPUs, as well as through GeForce NOW.
DLSS 5 will go live at 9 PM Pacific Time on September 3 alongside a new GeForce Game Ready Driver. Nvidia says players will find the feature in NBA 2K27 under the name DLSS Neural Rendering, with the option available alongside existing technologies including Super Resolution, Multi Frame Generation and Nvidia Reflex. The launch follows a recent leak of an early DLSS 5 runtime that allowed modders to experiment with the technology before its official release.
Unlike the earlier DLSS features primarily associated with upscaling, frame generation and ray reconstruction, 3D-Guided Neural Rendering is designed to enhance the appearance of an already rendered frame. Nvidia says the model analyses scene objects and semantic information to improve effects such as material response, lighting, subsurface scattering and fine reflections while maintaining the underlying geometry produced by the game engine.
NBA 2K27 gives Nvidia a particularly relevant showcase because of its focus on scanned athletes, skin, hair, clothing and arena lighting. Visual Concepts is using DLSS 5 to improve how light passes through skin, how hair reacts to illumination and how contact shadows appear on players, clothing and objects. Nvidia says the system preserves the facial geometry captured from real athletes rather than generating replacement character shapes.
Visual Concepts senior producer Peter Kavic said the technology improved the game’s materials and lighting and helped move its presentation closer to photorealism. Nvidia is also emphasizing that developers retain control over the final appearance rather than handing the entire frame over to an unrestricted generative model. Developers can adjust structure and tone parameters and use semantic masks to determine which parts of a scene receive neural rendering enhancements.
That control is particularly relevant after the leaked DLSS 5 files produced unusual results when modders inserted them into games such as GTA V and Control. Some experimental implementations dramatically changed the appearance of faces and other materials, leading to criticism of what the technology could do when pushed beyond intended settings. Nvidia’s official explanation positions those leaked experiments differently from production implementations tuned by developers for specific games.
DLSS 5 is also designed to work alongside traditional rendering rather than replace it. Nvidia says rasterization, ray tracing and path tracing still establish the scene’s underlying geometry, lighting and other visual information before neural rendering is applied later in the pipeline. Super Resolution, Multi Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction can also continue operating alongside the new feature.
The initial hardware requirements are narrower than previous DLSS releases. Nvidia has officially limited DLSS 5 support at launch to GeForce RTX 50 Series graphics cards and laptops, while GeForce NOW Ultimate subscribers will be able to use it through Nvidia-operated RTX 5080-class cloud hardware. Nvidia has not announced official RTX 40 Series or older GPU support, despite modders reportedly getting leaked versions of the technology running on previous-generation cards.
Nvidia has also published its own NBA 2K27 performance figures. At 4K using the Ultra preset with ray tracing, the company says an RTX 5090 can reach up to 370 frames per second when DLSS technologies are enabled. At 1440p, Nvidia lists figures of up to 590 FPS on the RTX 5090, 410 FPS on the RTX 5080, 350 FPS on the RTX 5070 Ti and 260 FPS on the RTX 5070, although these are Nvidia’s internal results rather than independent benchmarks.
Players will be able to switch DLSS Neural Rendering on through NBA 2K27’s video settings after installing the September 3 driver. Nvidia also says the feature can be toggled during gameplay and replays using F9, making direct comparisons possible without restarting the game.
NBA 2K27 is currently the first confirmed public deployment of DLSS 5, but Nvidia says additional integrations will be announced over the coming weeks and months. The September 3 launch therefore marks the first opportunity to judge 3D-Guided Neural Rendering in a developer-tuned commercial release rather than through leaked experimental implementations.
