Final Fantasy VII Revelation will receive physical editions on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, but none of them will contain everything needed to start playing without an internet connection. Square Enix has confirmed that the PS5 and Xbox versions ship on a single disc and require additional game data to be downloaded before the physical copy can be played. The Switch 2 edition is instead distributed as a Game-Key Card and requires the full game to be downloaded.
The requirement appears in Square Enix’s official product information following the opening of physical preorders. For both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, the publisher states that an internet connection is required to download additional game data before playing the physical version. Square Enix has not yet disclosed how much data will actually be stored on those discs or the size of the mandatory download on either console.
That makes Revelation notably different from the first two games in the remake trilogy. Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth both used multi-disc physical releases to accommodate their large installations, allowing the required game data to be installed from the discs themselves. Revelation is moving to one disc per physical PS5 and Xbox copy instead, meaning part of the game must be retrieved online regardless of whether players buy digitally or physically.

The situation is more explicit on Nintendo Switch 2. Square Enix’s official store confirms that the physical edition uses Nintendo’s Game-Key Card format, meaning the card acts as a license rather than containing the full game data. Players will need an internet connection and at least 130GB of available storage when launching it for the first time, with additional space potentially required for future updates.
Game-Key Cards have become one of the more controversial aspects of Nintendo Switch 2’s physical software ecosystem because the full game is not stored on the cartridge. Nintendo and third-party publishers have nevertheless continued using the format for particularly large releases, even as reports have suggested larger-capacity full-game Switch 2 cartridges could reduce reliance on Game-Key Cards for some future software.
Revelation’s 130GB Switch 2 requirement also provides some context for Square Enix’s decision. The game is significantly larger than what a conventional low-capacity cartridge could hold, while Square Enix is also releasing it simultaneously across several platforms. The publisher has not said whether technical limitations, manufacturing costs or another factor led to the one-disc PS5 and Xbox approach.
Physical availability itself had previously been uncertain. Director Naoki Hamaguchi discussed the subject earlier in development as the wider console industry continued shifting toward digital distribution, but Square Enix has now committed to physical releases alongside the digital versions. The compromise is that those copies will still depend on online downloads before players can access the full game.
The new physical-media details arrive alongside the opening of preorders for the game’s April launch. Final Fantasy VII Revelation is scheduled for April 8, 2027, with the final chapter of the remake trilogy introducing free Highwind exploration, the FITS combat system, expanded character switching and a new Queen’s Blood storyline. Square Enix is offering Standard, Deluxe and Collector’s physical configurations in addition to several digital editions.
Switch 2 is also receiving the game on the same day as PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, continuing Square Enix’s broader move toward simultaneous multiplatform Final Fantasy releases. Bringing the remake trilogy to Nintendo hardware has required significant optimization, with the scale of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s open world posing particular challenges on Switch 2. Revelation is expected to push that scope further with its expanded world and unrestricted Highwind travel.
For collectors, the main distinction is therefore between owning physical media and owning a self-contained copy of the game. PS5 and Xbox buyers will receive an actual disc containing game data, but an additional online download is mandatory before play. Switch 2 buyers receive a Game-Key Card requiring a 130GB download, making an internet connection necessary across every physical console version of Final Fantasy VII Revelation.
