Final Fantasy VII Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi has left the door open to a possible Fortnite collaboration, while stopping short of confirming that one is actually in development. Speaking with VICE, Hamaguchi said Square Enix is currently considering multiple collaborations involving Final Fantasy VII and suggested Fortnite could potentially be among them. He also named Barret as the character he could most easily imagine appearing in Epic Games’ battle royale.
Hamaguchi explained that Square Enix has historically been selective about major Final Fantasy VII crossovers because it wants to protect the identity of the franchise. That approach appears to be loosening somewhat as the company considers new opportunities around the series. His comments therefore indicate interest in expanding Final Fantasy VII through collaborations, but they should not be interpreted as confirmation that Epic Games and Square Enix have already agreed on a Fortnite crossover.
The possibility is more believable now because the two companies already have an active connection through Kingdom Hearts. Epic Games officially confirmed Kingdom Hearts content for Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4: Override, including Sora and the Kingdom Key, giving Square Enix an established relationship with the Fortnite team. Hamaguchi specifically referenced that existing partnership when discussing whether Final Fantasy VII could follow a similar path.

When asked which Final Fantasy VII character would fit Fortnite best, Hamaguchi pointed to Barret Wallace. His reasoning was straightforward: Fortnite revolves heavily around characters using firearms, while Barret already fights with a gun mounted directly to his arm. That makes him an unusually natural fit mechanically and visually compared with characters whose combat styles rely primarily on swords, materia or close-range attacks.
The discussion also revealed that Fortnite has already influenced Final Fantasy VII Revelation in a more direct gameplay sense. Hamaguchi said the game’s parachuting system, which allows the party to jump from the Highwind and descend into the world below, took inspiration from Fortnite. The connection aligns with previous explanations from the director that modern battle royale games helped inform the decision to use parachuting instead of letting players physically land the enormous Highwind everywhere.
That traversal system is an important part of Final Fantasy VII Revelation, which launches April 8, 2027. Players will be able to fly across a large interconnected world using the Highwind before choosing where to jump and descend toward points of interest. Square Enix has positioned the airship as one of the major ways Revelation expands exploration beyond the regional structure used in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
Hamaguchi’s willingness to discuss outside collaborations also fits with Square Enix’s broader plans for the property after the remake trilogy. He recently said the company wants Final Fantasy VII to continue evolving beyond the trilogy, rather than treating Revelation as the final use of its characters and world. Collaborations with other games could become one way of maintaining that wider presence, although Square Enix has not announced any specific post-Revelation crossover strategy.
Fortnite itself has increasingly become a meeting point for major gaming franchises. Epic’s current Override season includes or has announced collaborations spanning Kingdom Hearts, Sonic the Hedgehog, Mega Man, Persona 5 Royal, Pac-Man and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. A Final Fantasy VII crossover would therefore fit comfortably within Fortnite’s established Gaming Legends ecosystem if Square Enix eventually decides to pursue one.
There are still no confirmed Final Fantasy VII skins, cosmetics, release dates or Fortnite files tied to such a collaboration. Hamaguchi’s comments amount to an expression of openness rather than an announcement, and fans should treat any claims that the crossover is already “likely” or confirmed with caution unless Epic Games or Square Enix provides something more concrete.
For now, the most significant detail is that Square Enix is actively considering additional Final Fantasy VII collaborations and is not ruling Fortnite out. Barret would be Hamaguchi’s personal pick for the game, while Fortnite has already influenced Revelation’s Highwind parachuting system. Whether that creative connection eventually turns into a full crossover remains unanswered.
