WARDOGS has climbed past 337,000 concurrent players on Steam shortly after entering Early Access, giving BULKHEAD’s tactical shooter one of the most striking PC launches of the week. SteamDB recorded a new peak of 337,157 simultaneous players on September 10, while its tracking data showed the game’s user rating at roughly 43.13% at the time of the milestone. The combination points to enormous initial interest alongside a notably rough early reception from players.

The launch peak represents another major jump for a game that had already attracted an unusually large audience before release. WARDOGS surpassed 225,000 concurrent players during its pre-release testing period, with its September closed beta eventually reaching around 245,000 simultaneous users. Breaking 337,000 after the Early Access release means the live game has already exceeded those beta figures by a significant margin.

WARDOGS launched into Steam Early Access on September 10, 2026, and is developed by BULKHEAD and published by Team17. The game is a 100-player tactical first-person shooter in which three teams compete over a control zone across a destructible battlefield. Its design combines large-scale infantry combat, vehicles, teamwork and an in-match economy where players earn and spend cash during battles.

The scale of the launch is particularly notable given how modest BULKHEAD’s own expectations had been before the game’s recent surge in popularity. CEO Joe Brammer said during the closed beta period that the studio had initially expected only a few thousand concurrent players and was already preparing for player numbers to fall naturally after launch. BULKHEAD has argued that a smaller long-term community would still be sustainable even if WARDOGS does not maintain the enormous figures seen during its opening days.

The early user sentiment, however, creates a very different story from the player-count chart alone. SteamDB’s approximately 43% rating indicates that fewer than half of the tracked reviews were positive when the game crossed the 337,000-player mark. Early Access launches can see ratings move substantially as more reviews accumulate, but the initial figure suggests a considerable portion of WARDOGS’ launch audience has encountered issues or otherwise been dissatisfied with the current version.

That contrast makes the game’s opening especially worth watching. High concurrent-player figures show that WARDOGS has successfully converted much of the attention generated by its betas into launch-day participation, while the reception will determine whether that audience remains engaged once the initial interest settles. Steam performance has already been an important part of the game’s momentum, with WARDOGS recently appearing among the platform’s stronger-selling releases alongside titles such as The Blood of Dawnwalker.

BULKHEAD has also been unusually explicit about treating Early Access as an unfinished stage of development rather than a finished live-service launch. The studio said before release that WARDOGS would receive continued development while in Early Access and encouraged prospective buyers to watch real gameplay and make an informed decision before purchasing. It has also said that the game will not sell in-game cash or directly monetize unlockable camouflage during the Early Access period.

For now, WARDOGS has clearly demonstrated that attracting players is not its immediate problem. More than 337,000 concurrent users represents substantial launch-day reach for BULKHEAD, particularly after the already successful closed beta. The more important question is whether updates during Early Access can improve the game’s early reception and turn that initial audience into the sustainable community the developer says it is targeting.
