Fortnite v42.20 Adds New Tetris Tower Mid-Match Objective

Fortnite has added a new Tetris Tower mid-match objective in the v42.20 update, giving players another reason to divert from their normal route during Battle Royale matches. Epic Games says the towers can appear around the island and challenge players to climb a structure built from Tetris blocks to claim a reward waiting at the top. The feature arrives as part of the September 17 update for Chapter 7 Season 4: Override.

The objective is deliberately simple: find a Tetris Tower, climb it and reach the reward before other players interfere. Because the structures can appear in different places around the island, they are designed as opportunistic objectives rather than fixed points of interest that players can reliably plan around before dropping. That should make them more comparable to other mid-match activities that encourage players to temporarily change direction in exchange for loot or progression.

Tetris has already had a visible presence throughout Override’s map design. Chapter 7 Season 4 introduced Tetris-themed environmental elements across the island, including block formations around Sunken Shores, as part of the season’s broader retro-gaming theme. The new Tower objective takes that visual crossover and turns it into an interactive gameplay system rather than leaving Tetris as background decoration.

The Tetris Tower is one of several gameplay additions included in v42.20. Epic has also introduced a new batch of Match Overrides, including Recovery, Level Up, Dynamic Storm, Super Shot, Big Boom and Healing Overdrive. Two more Overrides, Suppressing Fire and Health Siphon, are scheduled to arrive on September 24, continuing the season’s focus on match-to-match rule changes.

The update also refreshes Fortnite’s weapons and item systems. Kingdom Hearts brings the Kingdom Key and Sea Salt Ice Cream into the loot pool, while Cyberpunk: Edgerunners adds Rebecca’s Guns. Loot Hacks have also been updated to work with another group of items, including the Hyperburst Pistol, Mammoth Pistol, Reaper Sniper Rifle, Deadeye DMR, Flowberry Fizz and Rocket Ram.

Those additions come alongside several discoveries from the same update files. Datamining has already pointed to four new Exotic weapons in v42.20, including variants based on familiar Fortnite guns. The patch has also expanded the game’s ongoing Sprite systems, with new mastery rewards and additional variants becoming available through the season.

Sprite progression is another major part of the update. Fortnite has added new Sprites including the Pond Sprite, Crash Bandicoot Sprite and Blinky Sprite, while a Birthday Sprite is scheduled to become available on September 26. The expanded progression track also introduces new rewards, building on the Sprite Mastery rewards uncovered in v42.20.

Tetris Tower stands apart from those progression and loot changes because it directly alters how players can interact with the Battle Royale map during a match. Instead of being tied to a menu, quest chain or static POI, the objective is placed into the flow of regular matches and gives players a visible structure to investigate. Depending on where a tower spawns, it could also create temporary combat hotspots as multiple squads converge on the same reward.

Epic has not detailed the exact contents of the reward at the top or whether all Tetris Towers provide the same loot. The patch notes also do not specify how frequently the structures appear, how many can exist in one match or whether their spawn locations follow a fixed pool. Those details will become clearer as players encounter the objective during live matches.

Fortnite v42.20 went live on September 17 after scheduled downtime and represents one of the larger Override updates so far. Along with Tetris Tower, it brings new crossover items, Match Overrides, Sprites, Loot Hack changes and other gameplay adjustments. The new objective is available as part of the live update and can appear across the Battle Royale island.
