Valve has released a new Half-Life: Alyx update introducing optional foveated rendering for desktop VR players, potentially improving graphics performance on supported NVIDIA, AMD and Intel GPUs. The October 26, 2026 patch also improves reprojection quality on Steam Frame, addresses rendering crashes in Workshop content and fixes an achievement-related bug.

The update extends a graphics feature that Valve introduced for standalone Steam Frame gameplay in September. According to the official Steam patch notes, PC players can now enable foveated rendering through the game’s Advanced Performance settings, provided their graphics hardware supports the required rendering features.

Foveated rendering reduces GPU workloads by rendering different parts of the image at different levels of detail. The area where the player is looking receives higher-quality rendering, while peripheral regions are rendered at lower resolution. This approach can reduce rendering costs without requiring the entire image to be processed at maximum detail.

Half-Life: Alyx uses Variable Rate Shading (VRS) to implement the feature. Its rendering system divides the image into three regions, with the central area maintaining full resolution and surrounding regions using reduced shading rates. When a compatible headset provides eye-tracking data, the high-detail region can follow the player’s gaze.

Valve’s configuration guide confirms that foveated rendering works with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 16-series and RTX 20-series GPUs or newer through the game’s default Direct3D 11 renderer on Windows. AMD Radeon RX 6000-series and newer graphics cards are also supported, alongside Intel Arc A-series GPUs and newer, but these require Vulkan.

Windows users with AMD or Intel graphics hardware must open Half-Life: Alyx in their Steam library, select Properties and enter -vulkan under Launch Options. The game must then be restarted. Linux players do not need this additional step because the Linux version already uses Vulkan.

The feature is disabled by default. Players can activate it by opening Options, selecting Performance and clicking the gear icon to access Advanced Performance settings. The Foveated Rendering toggle appears at the top of that menu when the selected GPU and graphics API support it.

Eye tracking is optional, meaning players can enable foveated rendering even without a headset capable of tracking their gaze. However, Valve recommends eye tracking for the best visual results, as it allows the highest-quality rendering region to move with the user’s eyes.

The official compatibility guide identifies several headsets capable of supplying eye-tracking information through compatible SteamVR drivers, including Meta Quest Pro, HTC Vive Focus Vision, Bigscreen Beyond 2e, Pico 4 Pro, Samsung Galaxy XR and Valve Steam Frame. Other devices, including PlayStation VR2, Pimax Crystal and Varjo headsets, can provide eye-tracking data through additional third-party software.

Compatibility depends on the headset’s SteamVR driver exposing eye-tracking information to the game. Simply having eye-tracking hardware does not guarantee that Half-Life: Alyx can use it without additional configuration.

Valve also provides advanced controls for adjusting the feature’s rendering regions and intensity. Players can choose between low, medium, high and ultra presets through console variables, although the default configuration is intended to work without manual adjustments.

The potential performance benefit depends on the GPU, headset resolution and rendering configuration. Valve has not published a universal frame-rate improvement figure for the update. The game’s existing dynamic resolution system can also use additional GPU headroom to increase image resolution, making performance gains less obvious in direct comparisons.

Beyond desktop graphics improvements, the patch enables stencil buffer tagging when Half-Life: Alyx runs natively on Steam Frame. Valve says this improves reprojection quality, complementing the headset’s existing depth reprojection support.

The change builds on September’s Steam Frame VR improvements, which form part of Valve’s continuing work on standalone and PC-connected virtual reality experiences.

Finally, the update fixes several rendering crashes affecting community-created Workshop content and resolves an issue preventing the Gnome Alone achievement from unlocking for some players.

The October 26 update is available through Steam for existing Half-Life: Alyx owners. Players using supported GPUs can enable the new rendering option immediately, while those with eye-tracking headsets may benefit from additional visual optimization when their SteamVR configuration is compatible.
