Nintendo has announced a free Star Fox update for Nintendo Switch 2 launching September 29, 2026, with a major expansion to Battle Mode. The update will add support for up to four players on a single Switch 2 system, allow groups of friends to form teams for online battles and introduce three new multiplayer stages. Nintendo confirmed the update during its September 9 Direct.
The biggest addition is proper four-player local Battle Mode on one console. Star Fox already supports online multiplayer for up to eight players, but the September update expands local competitive play so four people can face one another using the same Switch 2 system. That gives Battle Mode a more conventional couch-multiplayer option than the launch version provided.
Online play is also being expanded with team support. Up to four players will be able to group together before entering online battles, allowing friends to compete as a coordinated squad rather than joining matches individually. Nintendo has not announced any broader changes to matchmaking or player limits, so the existing eight-player online structure appears to remain in place.

Three new Battle Mode stages will arrive alongside the multiplayer changes. Katina revolves around fighting for control of a powerful laser, while Sector X tasks players with destroying asteroids while avoiding destructive energy waves. Venom takes a different approach, requiring players to scan data modules before escaping an incoming deadly surge.
The update builds on Battle Mode itself, which was added to Star Fox shortly before the game’s June 25 launch on Switch 2. The mode lets players take their Arwings into dedicated multiplayer battles separate from the campaign, with matchmaking, private battles and GameShare functionality available depending on how players want to connect. Nintendo is now expanding that foundation rather than replacing it with a separate multiplayer mode.
Star Fox launched exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 earlier this year as a cinematic reimagining of Star Fox 64. The game features fully voiced dialogue, an orchestral soundtrack and a complete visual overhaul while retaining the series’ route-based structure, where completing certain objectives can alter which missions become available. Players once again control Fox McCloud alongside Falco Lombardi, Slippy Toad and Peppy Hare as the team fights to stop Andross from taking control of the Lylat System.
The September Direct also delivered another Star Fox-related release. Star Fox Adventures joined the Nintendo GameCube Classics library on Switch 2 for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members, bringing Rare’s 2002 action-adventure to Nintendo’s current hardware. That gives the franchise two separate additions on the same day: a classic catalog release and a new multiplayer expansion for the modern Star Fox game.
Nintendo had already positioned September’s presentation as a major Switch 2 showcase through its September Nintendo Direct, and the Star Fox update was one of several post-launch announcements included in the broadcast. Unlike a paid expansion, the Battle Mode additions will be delivered as a free update to existing owners.
Nintendo has not announced any new campaign missions, characters or single-player stages as part of the September 29 patch. The focus is specifically on Battle Mode, with local multiplayer, team-based online play and the three new arenas forming the core of the update. Additional balance changes or bug fixes could still be detailed closer to release.
The free Star Fox Battle Mode update launches September 29, 2026 for Nintendo Switch 2. Once installed, players will be able to compete locally with up to four people on one console, form four-player teams for online battles and fight across the new Katina, Sector X and Venom stages.
