Nintendo Switch Cartridge Supplier Macronix to Phase Out ROM

Macronix, a longtime supplier of memory chips used in Nintendo Switch game cartridges, is gradually withdrawing from ROM production as it redirects manufacturing resources toward more profitable memory technologies. The decision raises questions about the long-term supply of traditional physical Nintendo games, although there is no confirmed disruption to cartridge availability.

Macronix chairman Miin Wu confirmed the phase-out during the Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer’s third-quarter 2026 earnings discussions, with the decision detailed in reporting published on October 29. Industry analyst David Gibson highlighted the implications for Nintendo’s physical game business on November 4, noting that Macronix’s withdrawal could contribute to a gradual shift toward download-dependent game formats.

ROM, or read-only memory, is used to store game data on physical cartridges. Macronix has been involved in Nintendo’s cartridge supply chain for years, making its decision relevant to publishers that continue releasing games on physical media.

The company’s latest financial results illustrate why it is changing direction. ROM products accounted for just 5% of Macronix’s revenue in the third quarter of 2026, compared with 26% during the same period a year earlier. ROM sales declined 39% year over year, while other memory products became increasingly important to the company’s business.

Macronix is prioritizing NAND flash memory, including products used in embedded multimedia cards (eMMCs), alongside higher-value NOR flash applications. The company has outlined two major capacity investments totaling NT$37.8 billion, with new manufacturing capacity directed toward NAND products rather than traditional ROM production.

Wu explained that Macronix is allocating capacity to higher-growth memory segments. The company expects its first phase of additional production capacity to become available in the second half of 2027, while another investment is not expected to contribute output until 2028.

For Nintendo, the immediate implications remain uncertain. Macronix is not the only manufacturer associated with Nintendo’s game-card supply chain, meaning its withdrawal does not automatically eliminate the availability of traditional physical cartridges.

Gibson expects other suppliers to continue supporting physical game releases, but believes the transition could encourage greater adoption of digital distribution and Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key Cards over time.

Unlike conventional cartridges containing playable game data, Switch 2 Game-Key Cards require players to download the game to their console before playing. The physical card must still be inserted to launch the downloaded software, but the card itself does not contain the complete game.

This distinction matters to players who prefer physical releases that can preserve a playable copy without depending on a separate download. The future balance between traditional cartridges and download-dependent releases has already attracted attention, including an alleged restriction affecting Switch 2 Game-Key Card reprints that Nintendo has not publicly confirmed.

Traditional physical releases nevertheless remain part of Nintendo’s software ecosystem. Upcoming products such as the physical Switch release of Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2 demonstrate continuing interest in cartridge-based distribution.

Macronix’s withdrawal is a confirmed manufacturing decision, but its effect on cartridge prices, production capacity and future game releases has not been established. Nintendo has not announced changes to its physical game strategy in response, and there is no confirmed timetable for when Macronix will completely stop supplying ROM products.

For now, the development represents a change in Nintendo’s broader hardware supply chain rather than evidence that traditional physical Switch games are being discontinued. Any acceleration toward Game-Key Cards or digital-only releases remains an industry projection, not an announced Nintendo policy.
