Fallout 76’s major free The Slasher update is now live, launching a new multiweek murder-mystery storyline alongside native PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of Bethesda’s online RPG. The September 15 update also introduces unique weapon crafting, Legacy Seasons and Season 26: Beware the Blood Moon. Bethesda says the update is available to all Fallout 76 players.
The Slasher storyline unfolds differently from the game’s usual major content drops. Players begin by tuning into Breaking News broadcasts through their Pip-Boy, with new parts of the investigation scheduled to appear over the following weeks. The mystery revolves around a series of murders resembling the work of the Pint-Sized Slasher, with players fighting Slasher fanatics, clearing Infestations, digging up unmarked graves and following clues toward the person responsible.
Progressing through the broadcasts and related activities will eventually draw the Slasher into the confrontation directly. Completing the storyline can reward players with a unique Power Armor set and the Super Slasher weapon, while Bethesda has also adjusted several Infestation mechanics alongside the new content. Reward drop rates have been improved in some cases, Infestation notifications can now be toggled, and fast travel to teammates inside an Infestation Zone is free.
The update also brings long-awaited native current-generation versions of Fallout 76 to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Bethesda says the new builds target 60 frames per second across Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and PS5 Pro, with additional resolution and variable refresh rate options depending on the hardware and display. Players need to download the native version separately from their platform’s store rather than simply patching the older console build in place.
Bethesda is using the move to current-generation versions to give its developers more control over platform-specific optimization going forward. Xbox Series X, Xbox One X and PS5 Pro can output at 4K on compatible displays, while PS5 and PS4 Pro support 1440p. Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and PS5 Pro also receive VRR support capped at 60 FPS on compatible displays.
Another significant addition is Unique Item Crafting. More than 80 uniquely named weapons and armor pieces can now have their Legendary Mods changed, while eligible items can also receive a fourth Legendary Mod. That makes previously fixed unique rewards considerably more flexible, allowing players to incorporate them into endgame builds without abandoning the special traits that originally made them distinct.
Legacy Seasons arrive with the same update, allowing players to progress through an older Fallout 76 season alongside the current one. The first returning season is Armor Ace and the Power Patrol in Cold Steel, while Season 10: Red Rocket “Across America” Presents: The City of Steel is planned to return with the winter update. Legacy and current seasons use the same Ticket pool, leaving players to choose which rewards they want to prioritize.
Season 26: Beware the Blood Moon launches at the same time with a new set of seasonal rewards. Players can earn S.C.O.R.E. and Tickets for items including the Blood Moon Weather Control Station, Creepy Cultist Well and Batty Skirt. New autumn seasonal fish and recipes are also scheduled to arrive on September 22 as part of the broader fall content rollout.
The Slasher update is unusually large because Bethesda is repackaging Fallout 76 across every platform to reduce its overall installed size after the download is complete. The update is approximately 119 GB on Steam, 119.7 GB through the Microsoft Store, 101 GB on Xbox and 92.2 GB on PlayStation. Bethesda says the large download is temporary and should result in a smaller final installation footprint.
Console players are also gaining access to Fallout 76’s Public Test Servers for the first time. Xbox players can join through the Xbox Insider Hub, while PlayStation 5 players can access testing through Bethesda’s community channels. That should give console users a more direct role in evaluating future updates before they reach the live game.
The Slasher is available now as a free Fallout 76 update on PC, PlayStation and Xbox. Its murder-mystery storyline will continue expanding over the coming weeks while Season 26, Legacy Seasons, current-generation console versions and the new crafting systems remain available as permanent parts of the broader update.
