LEVEL-5 has announced Professor Layton and the Curious Village Remake, bringing the puzzle adventure that started the series to modern platforms. Revealed during LEVEL5 VISION 2026 II on September 10, the remake is in development for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam. LEVEL-5 has not yet announced a release date.
The project returns to Professor Layton’s first adventure, originally released for Nintendo DS in Japan in February 2007 before arriving in North America and Europe in 2008. Curious Village introduced Professor Hershel Layton and his young apprentice Luke Triton as they traveled to the peculiar village of St. Mystere after receiving a request connected to the Reinhold family inheritance. What begins as a search for the mysterious Golden Apple develops into a larger mystery involving the village and its unusual residents.
Puzzle solving forms the core of the original game, with Layton and Luke encountering riddles and brainteasers while investigating St. Mystere. LEVEL-5’s adventure structure combines exploration, conversations and story sequences with individual puzzles that must often be solved to make progress. The original puzzles were supervised by the late Akira Tago, whose Head Gymnastics puzzle books provided an important foundation for the series’ distinctive approach to riddles.
The newly announced remake is separate from Layton: Curious Village in HD, the enhanced smartphone version LEVEL-5 released internationally in 2018. That edition upgraded the Nintendo DS game’s presentation for higher-resolution mobile screens and added previously unseen animated sequences, but it remained fundamentally based on the original release. The new project is being presented as a full remake for contemporary consoles and PC rather than another port of that mobile edition.
Its reveal comes at an unusually active time for Professor Layton. The franchise is already preparing for Professor Layton and the New World of Steam, which launches December 10, 2026 for PS5, Switch 2, Switch and PC. That game takes place one year after Professor Layton and the Unwound Future and reunites Layton with Luke in the American town of Steam Bison, meaning LEVEL-5 is simultaneously moving the series forward while rebuilding its beginning.
Curious Village Remake also follows a broader pattern in LEVEL-5’s current lineup. The company recently unveiled Yo-kai Watch 2: Haunted Domain for PS5, Switch 2 and PC, another new reconstruction of one of its older games. Both projects give established LEVEL-5 properties an opportunity to reach players on hardware that did not exist when their original versions were released.
For Professor Layton in particular, the multiplatform release is significant. The original Curious Village was built specifically around the Nintendo DS and its dual screens and stylus, while the upcoming remake is being developed for conventional console controls and PC as well. LEVEL-5 has not yet detailed how puzzle interactions designed around the DS touch screen will be adapted across each platform.
Other unanswered questions include whether the remake will retain every puzzle from the original, introduce new ones or substantially alter the structure of St. Mystere. LEVEL-5 has also not announced pricing, editions or whether additional material from the 2018 HD mobile release will return. Those details will need to come in later development updates.
Even without a release date, the announcement gives the Layton series two major projects on the horizon. New World of Steam is set to continue Layton and Luke’s story later this year, while Curious Village Remake will return to the mystery that introduced them nearly two decades ago. When it eventually launches, the remake will be available on PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and PC.
