Thief: The Dark Project Remastered will launch on December 3, 2026, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG. Publisher Atari and developers Nightdive Studios and Eidos-Montréal confirmed the release date on November 2, alongside preorder details, pricing, physical editions, and a new trailer.
The Standard Edition costs $29.99, while the Digital Deluxe Edition is priced at $34.99. The deluxe package includes the full game, a digital art diary documenting the remaster, the soundtrack, and a preview of the Thief: The Dark Project novel. Physical editions for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 will also be distributed by Clear River Games, with preorders available through participating retailers.
Originally announced in June 2026 with a winter release window, the remaster brings Looking Glass Studios’ influential 1998 first-person stealth game to modern hardware. Nightdive Studios is rebuilding the experience using its proprietary KEX Engine while retaining the original’s emphasis on avoiding confrontation, navigating shadows, and using environmental sounds to evade enemies.

The package combines the original Thief: The Dark Project with the additional missions, content, and updates introduced in the 1999 Thief Gold rerelease. This includes the original game’s 12 missions alongside three additional missions from Thief Gold, which also introduced five new enemy types.
Players assume the role of Garrett, a master thief trained by the Keepers, a secretive organization dedicated to maintaining balance. After leaving the order, Garrett survives by stealing from wealthy targets while becoming involved in a larger conspiracy. Gameplay focuses on infiltration, environmental awareness, and carefully choosing when to avoid or incapacitate enemies.
Unlike conventional first-person action games, Thief places considerable importance on light and sound. Guards respond to movement, investigate suspicious noises, communicate with one another, and raise alarms when they detect intruders. Players can use Garrett’s blackjack to silently incapacitate enemies, a sword for direct combat, and specialized arrows to manipulate the environment.
Nightdive’s remaster introduces updated textures, character models, animations, and other graphical improvements, with support for resolutions up to 4K and frame rates up to 120 FPS. Modern controller support includes rumble, motion and gyro controls, and a new weapon wheel for selecting equipment during gameplay.
Additional quality-of-life features include an item wheel, a mission selector that allows players to revisit completed levels, and adjustments to the original level design. A dedicated Vault also contains behind-the-scenes materials related to the game.
PC players will receive built-in support for custom campaigns, allowing them to access fan-created content alongside the original missions. Each campaign mission retains three difficulty settings, with different objectives encouraging alternative approaches to completing levels.
The December release adds another game to the Nintendo Switch 2’s expanding third-party lineup, which also includes Silly Polly Beast's newly announced November 2026 port and TANUKI: Pon's Summer, arriving November 10 across multiple console platforms.
Atari and Nightdive Studios have also released a new trailer titled The Tarnished Mirror, showcasing the remastered environments, stealth encounters, and updated presentation ahead of the December 3 launch.
