Windows 11 Adds Cloud Rebuild Recovery in KB5127936

Microsoft has introduced Cloud Rebuild to Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 26H2 through the optional preview update KB5127936, released on October 28, 2026. The recovery feature can reinstall Windows using a fresh operating system image and device drivers downloaded from Windows Update, even when the PC cannot boot normally. It eliminates the need to prepare USB installation media or a custom recovery image.

The feature is part of Microsoft’s gradual rollout of improvements included in OS builds 26200.9818 and 26300.9818. Microsoft confirmed the changes in its official update documentation, which also introduces additional recovery networking capabilities and drive sanitization options.

Cloud Rebuild differs from the existing Reset this PC functionality, which already offers a cloud download option. Microsoft’s new recovery method retrieves both the Windows installation image and device-specific drivers from Windows Update, rather than relying on the health of the currently installed operating system. The process is designed to return a PC to a clean, functional Windows installation following serious software failures.

For gaming PC owners, the change provides another recovery option when Windows becomes unusable because of operating system corruption or other software problems. However, it is a destructive reinstall rather than a repair that preserves installed games, applications, and personal settings.

Users who can still access Windows can initiate the process by opening Settings > System > Recovery and selecting Rebuild PC. Windows then restarts into the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), where the recovery process continues.

When Windows fails to start, the recovery environment can launch automatically after repeated unsuccessful boot attempts. Users can then navigate to Troubleshoot > Recovery and uninstall > Cloud rebuild.

The recovery process requires an internet connection through Ethernet or Wi-Fi to download the necessary Windows image and drivers. Before proceeding, users can review the target Windows build, edition, and language and must acknowledge a warning about data loss.

Microsoft has also improved networking within WinRE. The October preview update allows the recovery environment to reuse eligible Wi-Fi profiles previously saved in Windows, including certain certificate-based connections. This can simplify connecting to the internet when the installed operating system is inaccessible.

One of the most important limitations is that Cloud Rebuild removes the existing Windows installation and locally stored data. Microsoft describes it as a full operating system reinstall, with options to remove files or remove and sanitize them.

For gamers, this means installed Steam libraries, locally stored game saves, application settings, mods, and other files on affected drives may be permanently deleted. Cloud-synchronized saves or files backed up to separate storage may be recoverable afterward, but users should verify their backups before initiating the procedure. Cloud Rebuild should not be treated as a data-preserving troubleshooting option.

Microsoft also provides an additional sanitization choice intended for devices being sold, recycled, returned, or reassigned. This uses supported storage hardware’s erase capability to securely erase data before Windows is reinstalled. Microsoft explicitly warns that the operation is irreversible.

For enterprise environments, IT administrators can configure and initiate Cloud Rebuild remotely through Microsoft’s Recovery Configuration Service Provider (CSP), with support for rebuilding to the currently installed Windows version or a specified target build.

Cloud Rebuild itself is not entirely new to Windows development. Microsoft had already demonstrated the recovery functionality in Windows Insider builds earlier in 2026. The October 28 preview update represents its expansion into the optional update channel for Windows 11 25H2 and 26H2.

The addition comes alongside other ongoing Windows 11 improvements, including Microsoft’s efforts to reduce operating system memory consumption and expanded Windows Search controls for desktop applications and system settings.

KB5127936 is an optional, non-security preview update, and Microsoft is distributing several of its new features gradually. Consequently, Cloud Rebuild may not immediately appear on every eligible Windows 11 PC, even after the update is installed.

The feature offers a more integrated way to reinstall Windows after serious operating system failures, but users should consider its data-loss implications carefully before using it on a gaming PC containing locally installed games or files without backups.
