A new account of GTA VI gameplay shown privately at Rockstar North has revealed several details not demonstrated in Rockstar’s recent public footage. Spanish creator El Rubius says he watched more than two hours of the game with Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson controlling the build, including free-roam sequences involving interactive safehouses, rideable electric scooters, physical NPC interactions and unscripted world events. The information comes from Rubius’ own video describing what he witnessed during the hands-off session, so these features should still be treated as observations from a pre-release build rather than final launch specifications.

One of the more significant details concerns Jason and Lucia’s safehouse. Rubius says the demonstration began inside an apartment that has not appeared in the 26-minute GTA VI Extended Look, where many objects could be interacted with directly. Doors could be opened and closed, light switches could be operated, and opening a bottle triggered a dedicated animation while the liquid inside visibly reacted to movement.

According to Rubius, Rockstar’s emphasis on physical interaction extends beyond interiors. Electric scooters are rideable, with Nelson reportedly demonstrating Jason kicking an NPC while continuing to move on one. Cars also allow attacks without a conventional weapon, as Jason can swing the driver-side door open while the vehicle is moving and use it to strike pedestrians or other vehicles.

The preview also reportedly showed more nuanced interactions with animals and their owners. Rubius says players cannot simply approach every dog and automatically pet it; instead, Jason can interact with the owner and ask for permission. Both the owner and animal can react differently, including refusing the interaction or becoming hostile, while dog leashes are physically simulated and can respond when they come into contact with the player character.

Those details fit with Rockstar’s broader push toward NPC reactivity. During one sequence, Rubius says an unexpected traffic jam formed because of a crash that occurred without the player causing it. The occupants of the crashed vehicle turned out to be masked criminals whose stolen loot had scattered across the road, allowing Nelson to intervene, take their loot and turn the situation into a larger police pursuit.

Witnesses reportedly played an important part in that escalation. NPCs trapped in the traffic jam were able to recognize Lucia’s clothing and vehicle before contacting police, suggesting GTA VI’s wanted system can draw on information actually observed by nearby characters. That would make criminal encounters less dependent on an entirely abstract wanted meter and more closely tied to what witnesses see during an incident.

Rubius also described more physical detail around vehicles. Breaking into some cars reportedly involves manipulating a lock with the analogue sticks, with different tools available depending on the vehicle and quieter approaches capable of avoiding alarms. Car trunks can be physically opened and used for multiple purposes, adding further context to the more involved vehicle interactions already suggested by earlier GTA VI footage showing expanded vehicle theft mechanics.

The demonstration included a major crash during a police pursuit as well. Rubius says individual vehicle components deformed and broke away during the collision, while the damaged getaway car eventually became unusable. Lucia’s body and hair also reacted independently when police vehicles struck her against the damaged car, reinforcing the impression that Rockstar is applying its physics systems across characters, objects and vehicles rather than limiting them to scripted scenes.

Not every detail Rubius discussed should be considered locked for release. The build he watched was still in development, and some systems can change before launch. He also clarified that he did not personally control the game during the Rockstar North session; Nelson played while responding to requests about where to go and what to demonstrate.

The new information therefore supplements rather than replaces Rockstar’s official presentation. The Extended Look already showed expanded racing and vehicle culture, but Rubius’ account provides a more granular view of how much interaction Rockstar appears to be building into everyday free-roam situations. GTA VI launches November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
