Activision is reorganizing Call of Duty’s installed content on September 17, with Black Ops 7 and Warzone files set to be repackaged ahead of Modern Warfare 4. The company says the process will make the update larger than usual for players who currently have both games and all associated content installed. Once completed, however, the new structure is expected to reduce the total amount of storage used by Black Ops 7 and Warzone.
Call of Duty Updates confirmed that downloading or redownloading DLC packs during the process is expected behavior rather than an installation error. Players with substantial amounts of Black Ops 7 and Warzone content installed are therefore likely to see the biggest downloads when the reorganization begins. Activision recommends uninstalling modes or content that players no longer use before updating if they want to reduce the amount of data that needs to be downloaded.
The file overhaul arrives alongside Black Ops 7 and Warzone Season 06 on September 17, which brings The Haunting back to Call of Duty. Season 06 launches at 9 AM PT and includes new multiplayer maps, Zombies content, Haunted Hollow in Warzone and a DOOM crossover. That makes the September 17 update both a major seasonal content release and a technical preparation step for the franchise’s next premium game.
Activision has not provided exact download sizes for each platform or installation configuration. The company instead warns that the update will be larger specifically because existing content packs are being reorganized and repackaged, meaning the amount each player downloads will depend on what they already have installed. The important distinction is that the temporary increase in download size is intended to produce a smaller overall installation once the process is finished.
Call of Duty has used modular content packs for years to let players install or remove individual games and modes, but the shared launcher can still become extremely large when multiple titles and Warzone are installed together. Repacking the existing content before Modern Warfare 4 arrives suggests Activision is restructuring that shared environment before adding another full release. The company has not detailed exactly how the new package layout differs internally from the current system.
Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled to launch on October 23, 2026, giving Activision a little over a month between the September reorganization and the game’s release. Infinity Ward is leading development, with the new entry featuring a campaign, multiplayer and DMZ alongside a renewed technical focus on current-generation hardware and PC. The game recently went through a public test period, with Modern Warfare 4’s beta ranking behind Black Ops 7 and Warzone on consoles in Circana’s engagement data.
The September update also provides another indication that Activision is already preparing the broader Call of Duty ecosystem for Modern Warfare 4 integration rather than treating the new game as a completely separate installation. Warzone traditionally transitions alongside each annual Call of Duty release, carrying forward shared systems while receiving new weapons, progression changes and other integrations. Reports have already suggested that some current Warzone content could change once Modern Warfare 4 becomes the active premium title.
That includes the reportedly planned removal of Black Ops Royale when Modern Warfare 4 integrates with Warzone, although Activision has not yet formally detailed the full Season 1 transition. The September 17 file reorganization is different because it comes directly from Call of Duty’s official update account and specifically identifies preparation for Modern Warfare 4 as the reason for repackaging the existing Black Ops 7 and Warzone content.
Players who keep only selected modes installed should see less disruption than those maintaining complete installations. Activision’s recommendation to remove unused content before the update is therefore particularly relevant for players with limited SSD space or slower connections. After the repackaging is finished, the company says the combined Black Ops 7 and Warzone footprint should occupy less storage than before.
The reorganization begins on September 17 alongside Season 06, while Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23. Activision has not yet published platform-by-platform download figures, so players should expect the exact size of the update to vary considerably depending on their existing Call of Duty installation.
