Call of Duty players on PlayStation are being required to redownload Black Ops 7 and Warzone content following the launch of Season 06, with the unusually large downloads tied to changes being made to the Call of Duty installation. The issue began appearing as the September 17 update rolled out, with multiple PS5 players reporting that previously installed Multiplayer, Zombies, Endgame and Warzone packages were no longer available until downloaded again. Call of Duty-focused outlet CharlieIntel also reported that the redownload is part of an update to the wider Call of Duty HQ setup rather than a standard seasonal patch alone.
For affected PlayStation users, this means Season 06 can involve substantially more downloading than the initial update suggests. Players have reported completing the normal seasonal download only to discover after launching Call of Duty that individual Black Ops 7 and Warzone packages needed to be installed again. Exact download sizes vary depending on which components a player had installed beforehand, so there is no single file size that applies to every system.
The timing coincides with a broader reorganization of Call of Duty’s files as Activision prepares its software structure for the transition toward Modern Warfare 4. That process involves changing how current Black Ops 7 and Warzone content is packaged, with the intention of reducing the storage footprint once the transition is complete. On PlayStation, however, reorganizing those existing packages requires users to retrieve replacement versions of content already stored on their consoles, creating a much larger one-time download.

This is separate from the actual gameplay changes introduced with Season 06. The new season launched on September 17 with The Haunting, new Multiplayer maps and modes, Zombies additions, changes to Warzone and a DOOM-themed event among its major additions. The full Season 06 patch notes also detail Ranked Play adjustments, Warzone changes and other gameplay revisions that arrived alongside the installation changes.
Season 06 is also the final Black Ops 7 season before the franchise begins shifting toward Modern Warfare 4 integration. Warzone’s current Black Ops-era structure is expected to change as part of that transition, while Black Ops Royale is scheduled to disappear after Season 06. The season itself includes The Haunting, its DOOM crossover and the final Black Ops 7 content roadmap, making the underlying file restructuring particularly significant ahead of the next major Call of Duty release.
Large Call of Duty downloads are not new, and Activision has repeatedly reorganized the franchise’s shared installation structure in an effort to reduce long-term storage requirements. Similar transitions around earlier Call of Duty HQ updates have required substantial downloads because existing files need to be replaced or repackaged rather than simply patched in place. The practical downside is that an optimization designed to produce smaller installations afterward can temporarily require users to download a considerable amount of data again.
Reports from affected PS5 players indicate that the redownload requirement can cover multiple game components rather than just the Season 06 content itself. Some users have encountered download totals above 100 GB depending on their installed modes, while others have reported smaller packages, reinforcing that the amount depends on each installation configuration. Players should therefore avoid assuming that another user’s reported download size will match what appears on their own console.
There is currently no indication that players are losing account progression because of the reinstall process. Black Ops 7 and Warzone progression is tied to player accounts rather than the local game packages being replaced, so the change concerns installed data rather than rank, weapon progression or earned content. Once the required PlayStation packages have been downloaded again, players should be able to access their installed modes normally.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and Warzone Season 06 are available now across supported platforms. For PlayStation users, however, getting into the new season may require considerably more bandwidth and installation time than a typical seasonal update because of the accompanying Call of Duty file restructuring.
