Veteran actor Stephen Root has confirmed that he appears in Grand Theft Auto VI, ending more than a year of speculation surrounding his involvement in Rockstar Games’ upcoming title. Root acknowledged the role while speaking with the Associated Press at the BAFTA TV Tea Party in Beverly Hills, saying that players will see him in the game. Although the interview did not explicitly identify his character by name, Root’s comments strongly reinforce the long-running belief that he portrays Brian Heder.

Root explained that keeping his involvement secret had become difficult after his character appeared in earlier GTA VI material. He pointed to his recognizable voice, particularly among viewers familiar with his work as Bill Dauterive in King of the Hill, as one reason fans were able to identify him. Root also expressed enthusiasm about being part of the project, describing GTA VI as an impressive production to look at.

Brian Heder was formally introduced by Rockstar alongside the second GTA VI trailer in May 2025. The studio describes him as an old-school drug runner from the Leonida Keys who continues moving product through his boat yard with his third wife, Lori. Brian also allows protagonist Jason Duval to live rent-free at one of his properties in exchange for helping with local shakedowns, establishing a direct connection between the character and one of GTA VI’s two leads.

Fans quickly linked Brian to Root when the character began speaking in Rockstar’s promotional footage, with the actor’s distinctive delivery becoming one of the more widely accepted casting theories surrounding the game. Root’s AP interview is the first direct confirmation from the actor himself that he is part of GTA VI, even though Rockstar has still not published a conventional cast list. Since the AP clip does not have Root say “Brian Heder” by name, the character attribution remains based on his recognizable voice and the footage already released rather than a formal character announcement from Rockstar.

The confirmation arrives as Rockstar continues revealing more about GTA VI ahead of release. Recent official material has expanded on the game’s story and systems, including details suggesting that players will sometimes need to earn money before progressing certain story missions. Rockstar has also discussed the scale of Leonida itself, including an “enormous” number of enterable buildings intended to make interior exploration a substantially larger part of the game.

Root’s casting is notable because Rockstar has so far kept most performer identities out of its official marketing. A number of actors have been suggested by fans for major characters based on voice and facial similarities, but many of those identifications remain unconfirmed. Root’s willingness to publicly acknowledge his involvement therefore provides one of the clearest verified pieces of casting information available for GTA VI so far.

Outside games, Root has built a lengthy film and television career that includes Office Space, Barry and King of the Hill, among many other roles. His involvement also gives GTA VI a particularly recognizable veteran performer in a supporting role that appears closely tied to Jason’s early criminal life in the Leonida Keys. Rockstar has additionally confirmed that GTA VI’s single-player component will not feature real-money microtransactions or use generative AI to create the game.

Grand Theft Auto VI is currently scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. With Root now openly acknowledging his participation, Brian Heder appears to have become the clearest publicly identifiable member of GTA VI’s supporting cast, while Rockstar continues to leave most of the game’s performers officially unnamed.
