Stranded Deep 2 Revealed With New Desert Setting and 2027 Launch

North Beach Games has formally unveiled Stranded Deep 2 with its first trailer, screenshots and Steam page, revealing a major change of setting for the survival series. Instead of returning players to a chain of tropical islands, the sequel takes place in a vast desert wilderness built around an endless river. Stranded Deep 2 is scheduled to launch into Steam Early Access in early 2027.

The game is being developed by North Beach Games Prague with Stranded Deep co-creator Sam Edwards serving as creative director. North Beach Games first confirmed the sequel was in development in August 2024, but the latest reveal provides the clearest look yet at how substantially it will differ from the original. The new footage shows river travel, desert canyons, underwater exploration and encounters with wildlife including crocodiles and hippos.

According to the developer, players once again take control of an ordinary person stranded alone with no expectation of rescue. The river serves as the player’s primary lifeline while the surrounding desert introduces a different set of survival problems from the Pacific environment of the first game. Gathering resources, crafting equipment and establishing a safe camp remain central, but the sequel is placing greater emphasis on travelling farther into unknown territory.

North Beach Games describes Stranded Deep 2 as a “frontier exploration survival game,” with progression tied closely to how far players are willing to venture from safety. Better resources and rarer items can be discovered deeper in the wilderness, alongside locations that reveal more about the history of the world. There is no traditional linear campaign driving the experience, but environmental lore will be scattered throughout the map for players who want to uncover a broader mystery.

The world itself is procedurally generated and, according to the studio, effectively has no fixed edge. An endless river continues through the desert for as long as players survive and explore, while handcrafted locations are placed throughout that procedural landscape. Those areas will contain important materials, rare items and clues connected to the setting, combining randomized exploration with intentionally designed points of interest.

Water remains an important part of the sequel despite the move away from an island-based setting. Earlier developer updates confirmed that rafts are being substantially expanded, with players able to construct larger vessels and even place normal building pieces on them. That allows for houseboats and mobile bases, while a new mooring system lets players secure their rafts using bollards and ropes when stopping to explore an area.

Stranded Deep 2 is also being designed with multiplayer in mind from the beginning. North Beach Games has not yet detailed exactly how cooperative play will function, but the studio says multiplayer support is part of the core development plan rather than something being added after launch. The revamped Cartographer world-customization system will also return, with tools for creating areas and sharing them with other players.

Mod support is planned as well, continuing an element that became important to the original game’s PC community. North Beach Games says it intends to expand the sequel throughout Early Access based partly on player feedback, with additional content and improvements arriving after the initial release. Controller support is also planned during the Early Access period, while the studio is aiming for eventual Steam Deck verification.

For now, PC is the only platform with a confirmed launch window. Stranded Deep 2 will enter Steam Early Access in early 2027, with North Beach Games saying versions for other services and consoles are planned later. The debut footage makes clear that the sequel is not simply expanding the first game’s Pacific survival formula, but rebuilding it around an entirely different environment focused on an endless river and an increasingly dangerous desert frontier.
